De locaties van de gentechmaisvelden zijn bekendgemaakt en te vinden op www.vrom.nl/biotechnologie. Voor wie geen internet toegang heeft zijn ze ook in te zien in de bibliotheek van VROM in Den Haag.

Beste mensen, dear all (english version below)
Het ministerie VROM heeft besloten de locaties van de ggo-maisvelden nie bekend te maken of pas veel later dan na de vermelde 30 dagen. Dit geeft een heel slecht voorbeeld waar het gaat om openbaarheid en transparantie waarvan men zegt dat men er zoveel waarde aan hecht. Deze geheimhouding is voor XminY onaanvaardbaar mede omdat hierdoor ook
boeren in de omgeving van die velden absoluut niet weten waar ze aan toe zijn. Het ministerie kiest al jaren de kant van de industrie en het wordt de hoogste tijd dat daar een signaal tegen wordt afgegeven. Vandaar dat we u oproepen om het hoofd van de afdeling waar dit biotechnologiebeleid wordt gemaakt te mailen of te bellen om te protesteren tegen deze geheimhouding.

The ministry of environment has decided not to disclose the locations of the gmo-maize field trials.
This is a very bad example of how to be open and transparent, as they claim to be and value so much. For XminY this policy of secrecy is totally inacceptable also, but certainly not only, because farmers in the surroundings of these fields don't know what they are up to now. The Ministry already for years is siding up with industry and it is now high time to give a signal to them. That's why we ask you to write or call Mrs. van Limborgh, who heads the biotechnologydepartment, and to tell her what you think of this secrecy-policy.

Vier van de zes gentech maisvelden, experiment van de Nederlandse overheid, hebben het seizoen niet overleefd. De BT-mais van zadenmultinational Monsanto is resistent gemaakt tegen de (in Nederland nog niet voorkomende) maisstengelboorder. Maar nature strikes back. De velden bij Lelystad, Drimmelen (Br), Meerlo (N-L) en Nuth (Z-L) zijn deze zomer geheel of gedeeltelijk ten prooi gevallen aan andere plagen als maisstengelhakkers, -slammers en -knippers.
Het experiment was zeer omstreden, en is met deze akties zeker mislukt. De BT-mais is al toegestaan om commercieel geteeld te worden. In het Nederlandse co-existentie verdrag staan zeer lage afstanden, die gentech mais van conventionele en biologische mais gescheiden moeten houden. Maar grootschalige teelt van deze mais in Spanje heeft allang aangetoond dat mais over veel grotere afstand uitkruist. Op websites van organisaties als Friends of the Earth en Greenpeace is uitgebreide informatie te vinden over alle nadelen (milieu, economisch, sociaal) van gentech gewassen en BT-mais in het bijzonder.
Direkte aktie tegen proefvelden wordt blijkbaar niet tegengehouden door onderbetaalde, ongemotiveerde bewaking in witte auto's. Als de Nederlandse overheid wilde uitvinden of met dit experiment de acceptatie van gentech gewassen gemeten kan worden, dan heeft zij nu haar antwoord.

Four of the six GMO maize fields, an experiment of the Dutch governement, did not survive the season. The BT-maize of seed multinational Monsanto is made resistent against the (not yet in the Netherlands living) European corn borer. But nature strikes back. The fields near Lelystad (provincial capital of Flevoland), Drimmelen (province of Noord-Brabant), Meerlo-Wanssum (northern Limburg) and Nuth (southern Limburg) have partially or completely fallen prey to other plagues like maize hackers, slammers and cutters.
The experiment was very controversial, and is surely a failure after these actions. The BT-maize is already admitted for commercial cultivation. The Dutch co-existence agreement states very small distances that are supposed to keep GMO maize and conventional maize separated.
But large scale cultivation of this maize in Spain has shown already that maize seeds spread over much greater distances. On websites of organisations like Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace very extensive information can be found on all the drawbacks (environmental, economical, social) of GMO crops and BT-maize in particular.
Direct action against test fields is apparently not stopped by underpayed, unmotivated guards in white cars. If the Dutch government wishes to find out the level of acceptance of GMO crops by this experiment, then they have now received the answer.
