Agricultural Biotechnology in Europe (ABE) is a communications programme aimed at providing factual and science based information about agricultural biotechnology. Members of ABE are international companies who have pioneered the development of agriculture biotechnology and who strongly believe that biotechnology has the potential to be of great value to Europe’s agricultural and food industries. Members of ABE are committed to developing and commercialising products in a responsible and safe manner, always after extensive scientific research processes and trials. ABE’s communications activities are based on the fact that any technology’s public acceptance must involve processes that lead to wide understanding and acceptance.
The agricultural biotechnology industry is therefore working with various organisations across Europe to improve transparency and to foster a useful dialogue on GM technology. ABE works on wide-ranging communications initiatives with a variety of stakeholders – farmers, the food and feed industry, retailers, the media, policy makers and others – with the aim of listening to and addressing the concerns of all Europeans about agricultural biotechnology. We also act as a conduit to publicise information about the industry, GM technology and scientific developments. The opinions of diverse groups – farmers, consumers, trade and industry, scientists and governments – all help to promote a dialogue that enables an informed public debate.
