- Label GM food - put consumers before trade interests!
Consumers International (CI) is sending a 12-strong delegation to the Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL) to lobby for labelling of genetically modified (GM) food. CCFL takes place next week (9-13 May) in Kota Kinabulu, Malaysia. Countries with labelling of GMOs now, or in the future, must be protected from the threat of trade disputes at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This can only be achieved if countries support guidelines on labelling of GM food at this important Codex meeting.
- Marilena Lazzarini, President of CI says:
’If guidelines on labelling of GM food are adopted at Codex this will protect countries who already label GM food from being challenged at the World Trade Organsiation (WTO). Consumer interests must be put above trade interests. Consumers have a right to information, a right to safety and to a healthy and sustainable environment. They must be able to make decisions on what they eat based on ethical, religious or moral concerns. Many consumers do not want to eat GM food and they must have the information to make this choice. GM food must be labelled! -meer?-
